ID:CADH5_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Cadherin-5; AltName: Full=7B4 antigen; AltName: Full=Vascular endothelial cadherin; Short=VE-cadherin; AltName: CD_antigen=CD144; Flags: Precursor; FUNCTION: Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins. They preferentially interact with themselves in a homophilic manner in connecting cells; cadherins may thus contribute to the sorting of heterogeneous cell types. This cadherin may play a important role in endothelial cell biology through control of the cohesion and organization of the intercellular junctions. It associates with alpha-catenin forming a link to the cytoskeleton. Acts in concert with KRIT1 to establish and maintain correct endothelial cell polarity and vascular lumen. These effects are mediated by recruitment and activation of the Par polarity complex and RAP1B. Required for activation of PRKCZ and for the localization of phosphorylated PRKCZ, PARD3, TIAM1 and RAP1B to the cell junction. SUBUNIT: Interacts via cadherin 5 domain with PTPRB (By similarity). Interacts with TRPC4. Interacts with KRIT1. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell junction. Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein (Probable). Note=Found at cell-cell boundaries and probably at cell-matrix boundaries. KRIT1 and CDH5 reciprocally regulate their localization to endothelial cell-cell junctions. TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Endothelial tissues and brain. PTM: Phosphorylated on tyrosine residues by KDR/VEGFR-2. Dephosphorylated by PTPRB (By similarity). SIMILARITY: Contains 5 cadherin domains.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
